David Allan Coe. What can I say? The country man that was so metal. Known for his x-rated albums and his sometimes rank subject matter, David Allan Coe is an essential addition to the collection of any fan of outlaw country, southern rock, even some of the bluesier varieties of sludge metal. DAC is one bad mother fucker, as you can tell from such songs are Long Haired Redneck, Son of the South, and Willie, Waylon, and Me.

Musically, David has a very strong voice that he can tune to a lot of different sounds. From the mournful You Never Even Called Me By My Name to the gospel Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone).

Acrid - hard fucking core

I believe I have found one of the most pissed off, heavy, fast, and abrasive bands in all of hardcore punk. Grinding hardcore with a sludgy sting, these guys played with the likes of Assuck and Charles Bronson back in 1998. Five-piece, female bassist, groovy distorted as fuck guitars, and a vocalist (and back-up) with glass in his screaming throat. Canadians with an overflow of hate, they show plenty of metal influence and keep every song interesting with pounding riffs and solid song structure. It also seems that the drummer actively melds well into the sound of the rest of the band, not merely blast-beatting away.

Aldebaran - Dwellers in Twilight

That's it. I've had it. This record, Dwellers in Twilight, has bashed it's way up my top favourite Sludge/Doom records so far it annihilated Fleshpress along the way. Its Doom drives you face down into the ground, its Sludge will piss on you just for the fun of it.

So yeah, it's good stuff. Three songs reaching fourty minutes, expect moar and moar than the split with Rue which was posted months ago.

Grief - Torso

Grief. Archetypical Sludge/Doom band, one of the biggest names together with Eyehategod, Noothgrush and Corrupted. Torso is their 1998 album. Picked this up in my record store a couple of days ago. Tortured, devastating throaty vocals, minimalistic, trodding riffs and thunderrollin' drums. Lyrics ain't pretty, nor is life.

Cult of Luna

Cult of Luna are an eight-piece band from Sweden. Their initial sound is that of crushing Doom Metal, but they later mellow out into Sludge similar to that of Jesu, Isis, Neurosis, and Callisto. Hell, if you like any of those bands, you'll like Cult of Luna. I've given you their discography. I haven't listened to their newest album, Eternal Kingdom, yet, but I recommend The Beyond and Somewhere Along the Highway for starters.

Swedish stoner rock/sludge band. They've got a high energy style reminiscent of rock bands from the 80s, and a smooth chill sludgy style reminiscent of bands such as Down, and doom bands in the vein of Church of Misery. They've got a grinding style accented with heavy riffs. This is their debut album Triple Six Blues.

Southern Isolation

Okay, here is Southern Isolation's one and only album. Southern Isolation is a southern rock/folk band from Louisiana. The duo comprises Phil Anselmo and (then) wife Stephanie Opal. The band is made up of guitar and vocals, provided by Phil and Stephanie, respectively. Stephanie shows that she has a truly beautiful voice, singing lead in all the songs. Philip provides backing vocals on a couple of the tracks, and lead in the last song Southern Man I Am.

This album is executed beautifully. It's truly a shame that they only released the self titled. Just like with crust punk band Arson Anthem we're shown that Philip has mastery over the guitar as he does over singing. I honestly think all of you will get into this really easily.

Personal fave Sludge band of mine (second fave, but fuck it). In my opinion, they encompass like no other what Sludge should be; the Black Metal of Doom. Hateful, raw, minimalistic, PAINFUL.


This is a compilation by Slap A Ham records, probably the best intro you can get. Has some of their best songs. (Darrel's Porno Song! Useless! Stasis!)

Sourvein

Alright so here is the Sourvein EP Ghetto Angel. I gotta say, I've been looking for some Sourvein for a long time, without luck, until I stumbled across this. This is a really good album. It's droney, it's sludgy, it's crunchy, it's just fucking great. Anyway, Ghetto Angel opens with the song Nightwing, which is a decent enough song. The vocals are rather odd, they kind of remind me of Buzzov-en, actually.
